With all the search engine marketing acronyms out there it can be hard to keep track of what means what. Hopefully this handy little list will help clear things up so you can get busy on improving your rankings on the search engine.

SEO – Search Engine Optimization

The art and science of getting a website to rank on the top of the search engines. SEO is the # most effective way to reach new customers.

SMM – Social Media Marketing

Marketing on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Includes paid ads and organic search from within each platform.

SEM – Search Engine Marketing

Includes all strategies and tactics related to marketing on search engines including organic ranking and paid ads.

Organic Search

Links to your site that appear on search engines naturally without paid ads.

Paid Search

Paid ads, (typically Google Adwords) that appear above the search results.

PPC – Pay Per Click

Paid advertising billed on a per click basis. One click can range in cost from $.01 to $60 based on how many people are bidding on a give keyword.

PPI – Pay Per Impression

Paid advertising billed based on how many people actually see the ad, typically billed per 1000 views and doesn’t guarantee clicks.

Bounce Rate

The percentage of visitors to your website that immediately leave. A high bounce rate typically means visitors didn’t find what they wanted on your page.

Keyword Density

A keyword density report will tell the most commonly use keywords and keyword phrases on a site or page.

Backlinks

Links back to your website from other websites. Note: be careful with backlinking as an SEO strategy, these should never be paid or incentivized.
